The Meisner Technique
A complete path of actor development.
The Meisner Technique is one of the world’s most respected systems of actor training.
Developed by Sanford Meisner, it is a practical, sequential approach to learning the craft of acting. Rather than beginning with scene work, actors build their abilities step by step through a progression of exercises designed to develop listening, imagination, emotional depth, and truthful behaviour.
At its core, the technique is dedicated to helping actors live truthfully under imaginary circumstances.
The Studio’s Approach
Inspired by the work of William Esper, Justin Lehmann Studio is dedicated to long-form Meisner training. Students are guided through a structured progression designed to build not only skill, but artistic freedom. This is a studio for actors who wish to train seriously, develop deeply, and pursue excellence through disciplined practice.
Foundational
Why begin with foundations?
Most artistic disciplines begin with fundamentals.
A pianist begins with scales.
A dancer begins at the barre.
An actor is no different.
The Meisner Technique recognises that strong performance grows from strong foundations. Before an actor can fully inhabit a role, they must first develop the ability to listen, respond instinctively, work truthfully, and connect deeply with another person.
Craft
The Meisner Technique is one of the few complete systems of actor development using a progressive approach to actor training.
Each exercise builds upon the last.
Repetition develops listening and responsiveness.
Independent Activity develops concentration and craft.
Relationship work deepens personal meaning and emotional stakes.
Text is introduced gradually, allowing actors to bring truthful behaviour into written material.
Over time, the work expands into emotional preparation, character work, scene study, and performance.
The result is a cohesive training experience where every step serves a clear purpose.
